ETP as a Transport Standard in the Energistics WITSML Standard in Oil and Gas Drilling

Technical data related to various functions of the oil and gas industry such as drilling, interventions as well as completions need a standard to transmit between oil companies, drilling contractors, service companies, and vendors. WITSML is a standard that allows data communication between drilling rigs and other associated stakeholders.

Energistics Transfer Protocol, commonly known as ETP, is a data exchange specification that allows data and information exchange between multiple applications. ETP was originally created for exchanging real time data; however it will be further expanded for historical data functionality. It was designed for transferring real time drilling data and information in between sensors, acquisition systems, aggregators, client systems, and so on.

ETP was specifically designed and envisioned for a smooth flow of data in the oil and gas industry. It has been created to facilitate data transfer across energistics standards like WITSML. ETP was initially created for replacing the SOAP API in WITSML. The main goal of ETP is replacing level 0 transfers of data in WITS using TCP/IP with a comparatively simple and more efficient mode of real time data transfer.

The main advantage of ETP is that it uses feature notification mechanism which means that data receivers will receive new information automatically. With this feature, data receivers won’t have to check whether a data provider is ready for sending data. ETP is also designed on the basis of asynchronous message exchange that uses the maximum limit of the available bandwidth for upstream operations and avoids blocking of a remote procedure call. The fundamental design and working principle of asynchronous messaging is more efficient than the response pattern of SOAP/HTTP.

ETP is created on the basis of modular fashion, which means that it is designed as a collection of several sub protocols. Each protocol is created and designed to perform a specific activity or support a particular data workflow. ETP has different sub protocols for different activities like transfer of real tile data, static objects related to business (wellbores, wells, reports, etc) in the form of XML strings and transfer of large binary arrays.
